Aquona and the Aquae Foundation spread oxygen in Zamora

The aim of this project is to remove 140 tonnes of CO2 over the next 40 years and improve a total of 4.24 hectares of land in Zamora

‘Reforest Zamora’ will be developed in two stages. In the first phase, which has just begun in the Valderrey estate with the collaboration of the municipal drinking water service, a total of 765 trees will be planted of species such as holm oak, stone pines, almonds and Spanish junipers to offset the CO2 emitted by the company in its professional activity in the area.

In the second phase, 35 one-metre-high trees of various native species of flora from Castile and León will be planted to form an arboretum in Valorio Park, which in 2011 was declared a Natural Recreation Area by the Autonomous Government of Castile and León. This activity will be undertaken on 23 March, as part of events to celebrate World Water Day 2018.

With an investment of 12,000 euros, this project will eliminate 140 tonnes of CO2 over the next 40 years and will improve a total of 4.24 hectares in the municipality of Zamora.

We spread oxygen throughout Spain

Since it was launched, the Aquae Foundation's Sembrando O2 (Spreading O2) project has led to reforestation activities in Pego (Alicante), where over 4,000 trees have been planted in different stages, thus restoring eight hectares of forest that was burnt in a fire, and in the area of Arcas Reales (Valladolid), where around 1,000 trees and plants cited in the texts of Miguel Delibes were planted in an area of 1,200 m2.

In addition, as part of the project, two areas have been planted in Valladolid and Granada to compensate for CO2 emissions generated in the Aquae Campus activities held in these places.

Compensating our carbon footprint

The carbon footprint is comprised of all greenhouse gases emitted by an individual, organisation, event or product. Once the size of the carbon footprint is known, an emissions reduction/compensation strategy can be implemented. The trees have two functions in this respect: they absorb CO2 and generate oxygen. Therefore, planting trees is spreading oxygen: 22 trees meet the O2 demands of one person a day.

Since 2014, the Aquae Foundation has formed part of the ‘National Register of Carbon Footprint, Compensation and Carbon Dioxide Absorption Projects’, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment. Since this date, the company has provided information on its carbon emissions and on the progress made with its emissions reduction plan. In 2015, the Aquae Foundation made a commitment to reduce emissions by 12% in 3 years.
