Aquona and Simancas City Council are committed to the efficient use of water to combat drought

The objective is to involve Simancas residents in the preservation of water in the face of the increasingly frequent periods of drought caused by climate change.

Raising awareness among Simancas residents about the need to work together to make the municipality more resilient in the face of drought is the purpose of the awareness campaign that the City Council and Aquona will launch this summer.

Climate change has caused drought stages to become more common, as well as a general increase in temperatures. Reservoir water reserves in Spain in 2019 are 26 points below the average of the last five years and the average temperature has risen by one degree in the last three decades. These data show that water scarcity is already one of the main remains that cities and municipalities like Simancas must address.

For this reason, the municipal water service launches a campaign to raise public awareness of the need to preserve the water resource. Its radius of action focuses on the intelligent use of irrigation water and in order to achieve this objective, information leaflets of good practices will be distributed.

Among the councils that from the City Council and Aquona want to disseminate among citizens, they should be irrigated at the first or last hour of the day to avoid the rapid evaporation of water and favor its maximum use, select efficient irrigation systems such as drip irrigation, which allows save up to 20% of water, select species adapted to the local climate, plant in permeable lands that favor the penetration of water into the earth or regularly check irrigation facilities, among other measures.

It is about calling for the citizens of Simancas to become aware of the importance of conserving an essential resource for life such as water. In the summer periods and the heat waves that we are experiencing, hydration is a key element for people's health and it will be increasingly difficult to have water if we do not fight climate change together and achieve the objectives of Sustainable Development Development established by the UN.

For this reason, the City Council and Aquona invite the simanquinos to join their commitment against drought and the promotion of intelligent water consumption.
